Grace For Your Day September 7

Grace For Your Day

In 1995, Neurologist Oliver Sacks told the story of a man named Virgil who was blind since birth but he recovered his vision after a surgery. Unfortunately, Virgil’s first experiences with sight were confusing. He could see colours and patterns but he could not make sense of them. So Dr. Sacks summarized the problem this way: "One must die as a blind person to be born again as a seeing person. [There is no other way to make it work]."

The Apostle Paul says a similar thing in Ephesians 5:6-9.

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them; for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth).

Paul says that Christians are children of the light now. We have died as blind people only to be born again with our sight and we need to live like it now. We need to walk in the light.

This is a truth that Paul has mentioned over and over again in the Book of Ephesians. On numerous occasions he has told us that, if we are Christians, we need to act like it. We need to change. For example, he has told us to walk in a manner worthy of our calling (4:1) and to stop acting like children (4:14). He has told us to grow up in Christ (4:14) and walk no longer as the Gentiles walk (4:17). He has told us to put off the old self and put on the new self (4:22-24) and be imitators of God (5:1). Now he tells us to walk as children of the light. He tells us to leave the darkness behind.

Light is pure. It has no spots or blemishes in it. It is also illuminating because it shows us what is there. You cannot tell what is actually in a room until you turn the light on and it is courageous because it drives the darkness away. Light triumphs over the night and Paul says that we experienced that when we were saved. Jesus drove the darkness away. He put His light into our hearts and we need to act like it now. We need to change which is what we are going to talk about this week at Grace Fellowship Church.

We live in a dark world today. We live in a culture that is full of sin. People are blind to the things of God. They do not know the truth. Yet the Bible says that it does not have to be that way. We can show them the light and, just as importantly, we can walk in the light ourselves through the power of the Gospel. We can have victory over our sin through Jesus Christ. Come join us this Sunday morning at 9:30 as we talk about that. Join us as we see how Jesus can drive the darkness away. This will be a deep and rich study but it will be rewarding. It will be well worth your time. See you then!
